Origins & History
The Han Chinese trace their identity to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), which unified much of what is now China under a single administrative and cultural system. The name itself derives from this dynasty, though the ancestral roots of the group stretch back thousands of years earlier to the Yellow River civilizations of the Neolithic era. Over centuries of expansion, migration, and cultural absorption, the Han became the largest ethnic group in the world by population.
Geographic Distribution
Today, approximately 1.4 billion people identify as Han Chinese, making up around 92 percent of the population of mainland China. Significant Han populations also form the ethnic majority in Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Regional subgroups such as Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien, and Wu speakers maintain distinct languages and cultural traditions while sharing a common Han identity.
Diaspora & Migration
The overseas Chinese diaspora is one of the largest in the world, with an estimated 50 million people of Han ancestry living outside Greater China. Historic waves of migration spread Han communities across Southeast Asia (particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand), the Americas (with major communities in the United States, Canada, and Peru), Australia, and parts of Europe and Africa.
